The claims of a lack of tanks and healers in this game always makes me chuckle.
Due to the fact that there aren't any tanks or dedicated healers I find myself puzzled as to where the chuckle finds it's origination...
Oh I see, just because they claim that there's no tanks or healers, people automatically assume that all of those tanking and group healing specific abilities are unimportant. Gotcha.
If you take a little time to look at the skills and traits for every class then you'll see that 'every' class has access to those types of skills in one way or another. The proof that there are no 'dedicated' tanks or healers is directly in front of you. You also need to realise that the claim does not mean noone will need to absorb damage to live or to heal at some point. It just means that there will not be one single person who does only that all the time.
Yes, that is exacty my point.
There are skills, traits, and other such things that can and will be used to fill tanking and healing roles. There will be a need for certain players to take those roles at times. It's not all that different than most other MMOs.
Thanks puzzles are always a plus. I was referring to actual interaction with objects and people in the game outside of quest givers.
Like sitting in the tavern drinking ale waiting for your party to get together. Saying Hi to random NPCs that have a response if they are not a quest giver. Stuff like we have seen on other MMOs even WOW.
I have never seen this kind of stuff you are saying is present in wow... If you're sitting anywhere, you're sitting on the bank rooftop in orgrimmar when you have nothing to do or waiting for something to happen and you can talk to any NPC but you'll get the same text box every time so it's just stupid to walk to an NPC and interact with him.
I know that your town will be alive and will have people who you rescued or helped in some way, and they'll recognize you and greet you. I remember some of the dev saying you can actually start a bar fight in the tavern or stuff like that...
You can even pickup an object in the enviroment and use it as your weapon (which gives you completley new set of skills 1-5) and stuff like that... So the world itself feels more alive and gives you more interaction. It sounds cool, but we'll have to see it for ourselves to actually know everything that's available in the game.

Its strange because I love the fact that I will be geting content for free while some shlub spends his paycheck on keeping the content coming for me. All the while the guy gets only cosmetic or xp bonuses in a game where XP and leveling matters far less than in other games. People are likely going to go back to old content to pick up skill points anyway which would defeat the purpose of outleveling the content.
Anyway, obviously there are differnt opinions about it.
Believe it or not, this is the thing that concerns me more than anything.
Why is ArenaNet selling items for real money that have at best questionable value at worse, are pointless?
LOL. The answer to your riddle is very simple. The game mechanics are being tweaked to make them very valuable.
1) Why buy gems? Well, to buy gold to buy influence which provides RvRvR boosts. Very clear pay2win.
2) Why buy repair bot? Well, despite early claims by Anet that repairing is a false mechanic they have indeed put in the repair gold sink that makes buying repair bots worth it
3) Why buy EXP boosters? Well, until recently people claimed you could just sidekick up so they were meaningless. Lo and behold, sidekicking up is no longer a feature. Cash shop wins again!
The only unprecedented thing Anet is doing is charging you $60 for a game that they admit was "Built from the ground up with microtransactions in mind" Most games today designed this way are F2P.
I hope GW2 is P2W and I hope to see you there, so I can pawn your silly poor common folk arse.

From the videos, it appears to be the most shocking thing about this game. It looks to be insanely different than every other MMO in this way.

That is certainly one way people will play the game, that is true.
But I've seen other videos where they are much, much more effective using cripples/slows on enemies and speed boosts/teleports to kite/avoid attacks (of course also with dodge)
Point is, if you are taking damage you shouldn't be taking, and have to rely on your personal heal and regeneration abilities of your group mates, you're probably doing something wrong.
No class can stand and take hits from enemies without dying quickly, even if fully defensively built, and no class can heal enough to keep someone else alive if they are trying to stand and take blows even if they are fully healing/buff built.
If you don't move and avoid and try and prevent damage in the first place, you're doing it wrong.

Don't all MMO's have a cash shop now?Even subscription ones? There maybe a few that don't but I have the feeling that your MMO days are over because I seriously doubt there will ever be another AAA MMO thats released from now that dosn't have one from day one.

Not really, there is no aggro management. No class will be able to actually stay tanking by choice, they will be forced to do it one second and then someone else will the next.
Looking at cooldowns on abilities as well there is no way that 1 person or any one class could effectively continuously heal the group, it would be impossible. In fact, passive regereneration wouldn't be able to keep one person alive even if 4 other people were casting it on them continuously (which isn't possible anyway). If people don't heal themselves, they will be dead.
Saying there are no 'dedicated' roles is pretty factual based on the info thats on offer. The key word here being 'dedicated'. No one player/class will be able to decide that's what they want to do, everyone will have to do it and WILL be forced to.. if they don't it'll be a lot of trips to the repair npc.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
I've never understood this arguement.. I was curious so..
I just went on the wiki and counted 72 skills for Ranger ( ones that have an after skill, like signets or spirits were only counted once).
Then I went on the WoW wiki and counted 52 skills for the Hunter (including minimap tracking skills and the autoattack, which shouldn't really count imo.. also note that this is after years and years of development).
I don't hear people saying that WoW doesn't have enough skills.
Because in WoW you can use all those skills at anytime baring cooldown times.Never played WoW longer than 3 hours trial but I know in EQ2 you have all your skills you can use at anytime and you don't have dumb ass global cooldowns which is more of a turnoff for me.

This morning I read a document from another game which I had heard of before but not seen. Doesn't matter which, what it said though made me think. It was an exampination of what might and might not be ok for a cash shop. While some of the above (specifically any sort of boost) were an option, it was pointed out that the trouble with this is those buying them will get bored of that advantage even though it is minimal. They are the ones putting money into the game for further development. So then you are stuck with trying to remain attractive to the paying customers without losing the non paying customers. It's a tricky road to go down.
PVE where people aren't funneled into grinding end game gear till their fingers fall off. This is a blessing for a lot of players who want to play the game not the gear.
Eh, I never pay attention to hype. I wait and see for myself especially when dealing with this site because it's way more negative around this place than positive once a game releases. But really I learned my lesson from AoC. I bought in and was anticipating it so much I bought a new rig and everything (and for a guy with a wife and three kids that is not an easy decision) and then...well...we know how that went.
So I'll wait, get it when it releases and go from there. The features are very intriguing with this one. I really couldn't get into the original guildwars but this seems much different and worth the investment. Can't say I'm not looking forward to it but I am keeping it tempered, heh.
I don't believe i used the word overhyped anywhere in my OP.
But i believe hype is of two kinds. First is based on wishful thinking and very little information that is avilable. Second where hype is based on real and genuine information.
Too hyped or wishful thinking with lots oforrafsafa= Overhype
You mentioned that in your op.

Nope..what i said was that people will tell me not to get too hyped about GW2. Other then that i never said GW2 is overhyped. infact my whole OP is to ask that could it be that this time hype makes sense and is actually real.
If by "hype" you mean "excitement based off of a plethora of available videos/interviews/previews/beta information not under NDA."
There is only one thing that hasn't been shown extensively in videos and beta press articles - the shop.
See, I think "hype" is stuff like CGI trailers, heavily-editted developer released vids, and developer interviews/blogs and such.

You know what is not hype?
Hours and hours of raw footage and pages and pages of text from countless non-Anet affiliated press and other gamers.
Anyone who buys this game and calls it an "uninformed decision" simply hasn't done their homework.
It's all out there now, read/watch and decide for yourself.

The same thing you have done in every MMORPG ever made.
Find other stuff to do or wait until more content is released lol
Hype is when a company making a product uses fans by not providing ALL of the information to come to an informed conclusion about how good a product is or is not.
GW2 has been open about EVERYTHING except all of the final items in the store and that's solely because they are still making changes to what they are putting in there at launch.
I can give you a large number of examples of hype that would reveal to you how companies claimed one thing about their game which turned out to be completely different at launch, and when the devs made such claims they didn't actually have video proof of the claim as an example.
This lack of example thing didn't happen with GW2, there are seriously hours of footage showing everything in this game, how the ui works, how the classes and combat works, everything. So to those who love throwing out the hype card, you can claim that about any other title that hasn't been completely forthcoming, but GW2 because Anet has definitely revealed everything they possibly can to show (not just tell) those interested just what this game will be like once launched so there are NO surprises.
Anyone who is claiming hype about this game, hasn't been paying attention.
I know every time a highly anticipated MMO is about to release people go crazy with excitement but when was the last time this much information in form of videos was avilable for people to see? Anet is not keeping anythign behind closed doors and information about game is freely avilable for people to see. I spent last two weeks watching videos of GW2, seeing is beleving and that is exactly what i did. I must have seen hundreds of videos and cant think of one MMO which lets players get so much informaiton about game mechanics and features before release.
yes people will tell me to 'simmer down' and not get too hyped but what if i say 'maybe hype is for real this time'?
The hype is real, no question, I think you should have asked, "Will the hyped be justified/validated" But, that's just me.
And then there's the fact that "hype" can mean "create excitement/interest", or to make "false or questionable claims". So, while there is definately hype, only time will tell which it is, and if it's ultimately validated.
PVE where people aren't funneled into grinding end game gear till their fingers fall off. This is a blessing for a lot of players who want to play the game not the gear.

Quit, make alts find something else to do in game or play another till an expansion is release.
If you are going into guild wars 2 expecting gear grind, raids and all those carrot on the stick things, I am sorry to say you wont find them. And that is because guild wars 1 showed you really don't need all those things to keep playing a good game. And guild wars 2 is build to minimize the carrot on the stick mechanics that WoW relies on.
In one of the interviews they said its OK to play another mmo while playing guild wars 2. They also said, there is no real reason to make raids because you can never outdo the king of raids so you might as well not even waste the money on content less that than 10% of the population is gonna care about.
