Interdiction Studios was announced as the new publisher of Greed Monger a day ago. They just backed out.

How do you sell a barely complete game and $100,000 debt to kickstarter?  Who would buy such a thing?

Update: According to Jasons post on the GM forum, Interdiction did not BUY the game, they are taking over development which I would imagine is for a big percentage of the profits.  It is also based on what Jason says they have ready at this moment which could be very different than what James delivers.

    Debt? What debt?

Donations to a kickstarter campaign are not repayable in any real sense.  If the funds are spent on the development of the game they are a bonus to the buyer not a debt.

Game was not sold, some developers have the passion to help finish such a game being a dev myself for game development I can see someone taking this on. I personally would not due to James, I personally have seen him run his month on Unity site all the time... I know people who worked with him, they actually asked me, but I do this professionally  I don't work for free...

Plus I knew this game would fail any company who changes engines more than once is a sign that the dev team is lost..  For a new company trying to make a name for them selves bad idea to take a game like this who knows the mess they would get into to.. I bet they would have a ton of work to do and the work I bet is a mess... I have worked on MMO's AAA and indies , not bashing  indies I support them but I followed this game, and said day 1, they would fail, due to how it was run..

You need a good project lead and a team that works well, skill can be taught, but people who have bad attitudes will be reflected on the game they are making, I seen games fail and some do well. The main reason indies fail, is because lack  of funds, bad leadership, and a lazy team... That may not listen well..

Here is my take on what happened with this studio:

Day-1:  Jason reaches out to all Ohio based studios and says he has a 75% completed game for someone to finish and he will give 50% of the profit once it launches.  Interdiction agrees as Jason talks a good game.

Day-2:  Interdiction does some background research into this game, and Jason, and realizes they just signed a deal with the devil.  They back the frick out as fast as they can.  Now Jason is running around trying to find some other studio who will take responsibility for his mess.  He has no money to pay anyone (since he pocketed probably around $75,000 to pay for his upscale living) and most real developers would not touch it if he did have money.

Can not wait to see what Jason does next.  My guess is that right now he is searching through developer forums looking for a sap who is willing to do all the work on this game for a small percentage of the profit.

have officially signed the agreements that give James Proctor and Joel Hager complete ownership and control of the Greed Monger IP and in that agreement, they are taking over all assets and licenses related to Greed Monger as well as liability for the Kickstarter and website backers and will be committed to honoring all of your pledges.

James- I wish you luck man. I really like you and really want to see you succeed. I think you are a hell of a guy with some serious balls. You faced us whenever you were called out. You entered places that would scare chuck norris to enter in order to defend your game.

I hope this all works out for you and I hope we stay in touch in a personal level.

I ... Dont even know dude. I hope you guys do really well

Thanks... I hope that MMORPG.com will give us a chance and put our listing back. I'm really looking forward to some great conversation and feedback from the community. I'm also going to be taking a backseat and mostly allowing our PR guys to handle things here and else where now. I have faith they will show the same respect and restraint I've shown here over the years. I'll be around from time to time to check up on things though.

James,  I hope you had a lawyer review the documents before signing.  I also hope that you received a certified breakdown of expenses incurred related to the Kickstarter funds.  As you (according to the last update on Kickstarter) have now assumed liability for the Kickstarter, I sure hope you can account for every dollar raised/spent.  Not just some Email from Jason saying "Dude nothing is left.." but actual invoices matched up against the budget...

So James, let me get this straight....

You already had an MMO on works, Rise of Heroes Online (which website is now defunct) and then you jump ship on a failing project called Greed Monger, then in less than 72 hours you decide to take it on board again ?

So what happens to your own game?

If you did not have resources and manpower to do YOUR OWN GAME, how can you even think of making Greed Monger?

Jason was smart, he passed the burning and sinking ship to you and cleaned his hands off the Kickstarter deal which makes him not accountable anymore, and YOU are left with all the problems, the negativity surrounding this game (which wont go away no matter what) and now you are left with the task of cleaning up his mess?

    Wow!

The funny thing is you thought someone could actually make an MMO of this scope and have all the mechanics you want the game to be, and this shows people a HUGE lack of development understanding on what takes to make a game.

This is not in question your ability to code or not, but it seems to me a case of someone that knows how to cook tasty food, suddenly think they can run a restaurant...

I wish you well in your endeavours, but you have no idea the mess you got yourself into and I think deep down you know this wont end well.

Greed Monger is too ambitious to be done without any funding, and now that Jason passed you the hot potato and used up the majority of the Kickstarter money (mostly on himself according to close sources), this whole project is now seeming more and more impossible to deliver.

We will be here to wait and see what happens, but I bet my left testicle that this game wont ever launch with all the advertised mechanics.

Any ways, wish you good luck.

PS: Oh, and according to your own game's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/riseofheroesmmo you will be developing Rise of Heroes MMO game AND Greed Monger?

    With no funding for both?

Whelp! LOL! Talk about biting more than you can chew...

Also, if you have not had someone review the documents and/or gotten a certified breakdown of expenses (and liabilities), most states have a 3-5 day "cooling off" period where you can back out of a contract after you come to your senses.

If I were you I would be quite concerned that Jason was sure to point out that you assumed all the Kickstarter Liabilities.

Greed Monger is MMO Interactive's ONLY game in development. We will make sure GM is launched successfully and the KS Backers are taking care of before even thinking about future projects.

As the person handling the Business side Joel went over everything and made sure we were protected. Basically at this point if we mess up moving forward we are responsible if any legal issues arise from choices made in the past before MMOI owned GM then Jason is still responsible... However I am hoping the community will allow Jason to just peacefully leave and work with us to move things forward. There are no hard feelings between Jason, my self, or MMOI and it's important to just get this behind us and move GM forward.

If the Kickstarter "investors" have a legal stake, in the money they "invested" in then the new company remains responsible for that stake. As zymurgeist already pointed out though that it's doubtful whether Kickstarter backers can be seen as investors.

If Jason Appleton has done anything legally punishable in the past then he remains responsible for that in person, no contract can change that.
