A mural that size would be in the £400 - £1000 price range, maybe slightly more for the high render. Having a custom print of 550 cm by 310cm (18 ft by 13 ft) costs around £450. Any person with an average job can pay for that.

This is kind of becoming the issue with the whole project. Nothing's shocking anymore, everything is varying degrees of "let down", to the point that, if you point to certain problems anymore, it just all becomes so blase.

Ok so by what you say they paid $427.32 and it cost them $854.64 which I would agree is a more respectable number. But I would love to know who Robert's used and how much he spent of BACKERS money on these 2 murals. The way he hes wasted backer money in the past does not show he would go looking for the cheaper one. But still he said he would never use backer money other than for the game.
But still he said he would never use backer money other than for the game.
As I tried to point out in a previous post....is buying a chair for a programmer using backer money on something other then the game?
If you think it is then that is laughable.
If you don't think it is then please explain why a chair to sit on to allow the programmer to write in comfort and a piece of visual art to stimulate the creative processes are different?
"I promised a long time ago that the funds that we raise prior to what we consider the commercial release of Star Citizen would go towards additional development. Because of all of your support we can build this game bigger and better than anyone thought possible a few years ago.
With big numbers comes big attention. Some people look at the number and say “Why should they have all that money?” Well it’s because you want to build a big, bold game that doesn’t compromise! This is the secret. The additional money that comes in doesn’t go towards dividends for shareholders or making analysts happy with our profitability. It gets invested into making Star Citizen the best it can be. Hiring the best talent possible and allowing them to reach for the stars. Your contributions are going towards making the game better for you and all your friends. How could that possibly be a bad thing?"
Do you mean that? I dont think he is saying that all the money will only go toward the game to 100%.
I don't want to be a "little person" in holding on to "he-said, she-said" type stuff, and I'll assume you weren't following this project back then, but Chris definitely stated to the press elsewhere (too busy to find the link now, apologies if someone already posted) that 100% of the funds collected via crowdfunding prior to release would go toward making the game. As in: their profit margin would be precisely 0%.
This was when the project was under full steam toward 100M, and was ostensibly a way to assure contributors that their "donations" were not being used to "line the pockets" of CIG.
Having had some academic training in financial management, I immediately recognized Chris' assertion as ludicrous for a project of this nature; however, I was scoffed away from most discussions by legions of fans (this was prior to summer 2015).
Now, I can see how having large scale artwork can be a good thing toward motivating employees, sparking the imagination, etc. Therefore, I suppose you could argue that this is a "project expense". Indeed, perhaps this mural is Chris' way of remaining true to his word.

I agree backer money can be used to buy a chair, but not a $1500 chair or desk like he has in the past. That would be wasting backer money. Unless of course once the game is made one of the backers gets that chair or desk.

so my point is three fold
1. why bother basically saying the same thing over and over again for years to the same audience that doesnt want to hear it?
2. why do you even care what other people do or dont do with their money
3. do we really need to create systems of safety that protect the most stupid of consumers?

Of course there is no proof of him using backer money. But because Robert's has no other income coming in it is safe to say he is using backer money.
Oh wait I know Robert's took a poll and all the backers said OK to him spending a LOT of money on stuff like this that has nothing to do with the game.
I think what the OP was saying that he'd rather see a blank wall and all that time and energy for extra stuff go into the game itself rather then embellishments for the staff. People named other companies that do this but none named are fully funded by the players.
I could see adding all this stuff from profits after the game has launched. But it appears the people who are putting the most money into the game don't mind such spending or decorating of all the offices and spaces.
The problem with the OP and crew is on one occasion they're railing about ship sales being sales, and not a form of crowdfunding (investing/donating)...if that's the case they're making legitimate company funds to spend how they wish, can't have it both ways. Yet now we're to believe they have no money of their own, every cent is crowdfunded money

honestly I think in the main this stipulation of is it money from crowdfunding or is it money from someplace else is something that only the anal retentive critics care about one way or the other and only care about it so they can get off to a 'gotcha'
Overall the story is this: CR and team is very very very good at marketing and raising money, more so then they are at making a game.
is that by default a bad thing? no. but it does appear to be the case. can the best dev team ever create a better project for $10,000 then a mediocre team can at 100 million? well not sure. So marketing does help

Feel free to link to any PROOF on where Roberts is getting his private money from beside CIG. You obviously have intimate knowledge about it as you seem to know it en detail.
Its not like Chris Roberts could have used his earned money from the last 20 years to e.g.
* buy stocks * buy real estate * buy housing * get royalty from previous games or movies * get fees for speeches at conventions etc etc etc
and earn money at regular intervalls from all those private investments.

You can have it both ways. Someone could simultaneously purchase a ship from them and be upset that their money isn't going towards the production of the game. People do it all the time in other MMOs (for example WoW) when they are upset about how their sub money gets spent.

People doing it doesn't make it true or a legitimate complaint. How a company spends profits is up to them is it not? As for having it both ways, sales are sales, donations are donations, investing is investing. Can't really have it both ways with any of that.

@Brenics, please bother clicking the link and go to that page, instead of taking Smart's word for it. See for yourself, that page is for a hired artist named Morgan Bricca, out of California that Hand Paints the walls for 5 hours a day. Not simply getting it digitally printed like they did at CIG. Here's an example of the cost of a digital print. .
Seriously folks, I don't want to seem like I'm being mean when I say this, but Derek is just a jealous old fool. He will twist and turn anything to try and fit his narrative, and he panders to the attitudes of people who are angry at a genre they feel scorned by, for many different reasons. He uses them for attention, he wants to be relevant. If he bothered to make a decent working game though, he would be relevant without his charade.
We've had enough evidence of his jealous anger towards SC fans, when he comes in and bombards threads like Beetlejuice. That's all the evidence anyone should need to know he's full of it.
I see no problem using backer money to pay for a building a few desks/computers/chairs to make the game. For paying wages is also fine, but I do believe crowdfunding/KS needs to have laws revised so they have to show where every penny is going. Right now one thing Roberts has done is created a scheme where only a few people know exactly where the money is going.
1. Does he really need as many companies to make this game?
2. Has he set it up to where multiple people are getting multiple paychecks from these companies?
3. Could he spend a lot less money on decorating the places people work?
4. How many people actually work in the room with the mural he paid backer money with?
5. How much movie making products has he wasted money on for his and Sandi's personal projects?
6. If monthly subs only pay for the video they make is there any real oversight with that money?
7. Exactly what rights does Robert's say the backer's have?
Those are just a few questions that really need to be addressed and laws need to be made so people like Robert's does not scam backer's.
Clearly to me KS/crowdfunding has been hurt big time because of how Robert's have created this financial mess.

I was referring to your statement about people saying that about WOW or anything else they buy from a company, none of that money has to be spent how the consumers see fit, that's not the way commerce works, a seller's profit is not beholden to any consumer .
As for your statement here, that goes back to my original point, if ship sales are sales, they wouldn't count as part of the crowdfunding CR was referring to.

5. How much movie making products has he wasted money on for his and Sandi's personal projects? NOT A CLUE OR A CLUE WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT
6. If monthly subs only pay for the video they make is there any real oversight with that money? ITS EXTREEMLY LIKELY THAT THERE IS OVERSIGHT TO THAT MONEY, ITS JUST MIGHT NOT BE SPENT THE WAY YOU WANT IT TO

$2,646 for 12ft x 30ft, and for the largest one they make which is 12ft x 60ft it would be $4,932, and that's for reusable fabric, not just simple paper. Paper is cheaper, by quite a bit.
