I am illustrating by example the problems that will arise from remote crowd-micro-mangement of a project. disaster is what happens. Not that SC is not a distaster in its own right but micromanagement by crowd would just make it worse
Well said but it doesn't make your post any less trollish. FFS you have @Brenics arguing against you and we all know how he makes Don Quixote look like a quadriplegic on Ambien when it comes to SC.
some people need example. actually in fact MOST people need example.
more over, I think the reason they didnt address my original point or the examples and instead skirt around it is because they know I am right.
Its an example of two sides not being forthright and both sides knowing each side is not being forthright.
pretty much all game releated internet threads
I 100% concur on that.
Having said that:
I am a backer of SC to the tune of about $100 all told. I am not a doom and gloom backer. I think @Erillion goes too far sometimes I know @Brenics goes too far most times I agree with OP that this mural is beyond the pale if any backer money was used I agree with others that we don't know how the money was raised to buy said mural
How's that for being a forthright 2 sided person?
Bartoni's Law definition: As an Internet discussion grows volatile, the probability of a comparison involving Donald Trump approaches 1.

In turn here is my version of it.
1. SC is very well known (in my view) at being better at marketing and paying more attention to marketing then the actual game so this mural comes to me as no surprise whatsoever and I think in the same way as EA has murals in their lobby this in fact does generate revenue and anyone donating money to SC SURELY knows this is how business works for them.
2. Crowd Micromanagement almost always turns out to be a disastrous nightmare as a result one should donate to projects they think are running well and not donate to those that are and not and try to get into the messy details of micromanageemnt
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

But....but...that makes sense....how can people be angry about reasoned responses.....oh wait, they do it all the time!
Good post.
I personally don't care if the mural was backer money or not, a business is a lot more then drab walls and end product and there is a lot needed to be successful, not all are obvious or simple to get, especially to outsiders.

Sorry but I see no revenue bonuses for having a giant poster on your offices wall unless you have been paid to have it there. How many potential backers will ever go there to see it? They are selling SC on the Web, not from their office.
Point number 2 is a given. Although I don't see getting upset at paying $1k+ on a giant nerd poster as micromanaging.

then why do you think EA does it?
The reason so many development companies put stuff like that in the lobby is not because its cool but for public image, employee retention based on image. this is revenue creation that is all part of the marketing department. its just passive not direct.
why are the rules different for SC when it comes to banners then it is for every single other AAA company out there?
in short, why are we literally discussing the 'misuse' of something every single AAA company does?'

Well they will need investors at some point or another. Be it for some major expansion or just to keep the services alive. Said investors will not be jazzed up by a lobby that look like the loading room from the matrix. You put up things like that to sell a vision and a idea as much as the product itself.

IMHO it just seems unseemly to spend (maybe) backer money on almost literal window dressing for your office before you have given your backers what they have backed.
Though in the long run I do agree it will not impede the actual making of the game. Again it just looks tacky.

its bizzare its as if all rules of marketing somehow dont apply here.
we are literally saying its inappropriate here but totally appropriate for every AAA game studio to do it. nearly explictly saying it
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Wait so we know all monthly subs pay for filming shit. So now you say selling ships are for buying murals and anything else they want. So where does the money he said would only go to game development come from?
I say again...large murals ARE part of development costs.
Sorry I just do not see a mural being part of development. Now the guy that created the ship I can see as development if he made it and worked in the concept demo they have. But to make it and sell it for income also does not seem a part of development. More so after getting 110m from it. So far i see no game made from any development but I see a lot of buildings, expensive furniture, cars, home's all being bought with sales from concept art. .
That's okay you don't have to see it that way, because you don't know. For all we know the employee could have a side business where he does these as a pet project to grow interest for potential customers. We have zero proof that any money was even paid to have this done. You're just grasping for straws that fit your narrative, it's getting pretty old. If you spent money on SC and you have a problem, ask for a refund. If you don't like the game, go play something else. Coming here day after day trying to post and find things to nitpick about a game you aren't even going to buy is pathetic after a few years.
When we get some real proof we can start to take it seriously. People arguing over a damn wall print, or clickbait articles by gamergate news sites doesn't prove anything but the fact people will be petty over anything. Even without all the facts.
I have to say the same WTF are you talking about? How can a company pay for stuff like this when the game they say they would create only using backer money isn't even 1/4 way done. Maybe you should go play a finished game and see what it is like.
Until the game is finished they should only be using funds from concept art should only be using that money for the game.
I do have one question for you. How much do you actually think Robert's has left when he paid for all these companies furniture and these murals and paying the employee's? Wouldn't that be the real question about all this. Erillion keeps saying they have 110m but in reality they may actually be broke and need 3.2m a month to keep coming in just to keep going day to day.
I don't think you read my post, and if you did, you didn't get the point. The point is we don't know what he has or hasn't paid, so we don't know how much is left. Do you get it now? What we do know is that people are still buying ships, so the train will keep on going. As long as the employees who are still actively needed on the project, are still getting paid, what does the rest of it even matter? Games are made by paying salaries, and having nice walls. I thought this was common knowledge by now, but I guess it's not.
IMHO it just seems unseemly to spend (maybe) backer money on almost literal window dressing for your office before you have given your backers what they have backed.
Though in the long run I do agree it will not impede the actual making of the game. Again it just looks tacky.
I am just going to have to accept that I will need to say the following prhase at least 1000 times before somoene addresses it.
'this is what every single AAA studio does'
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
I will defer to both of your seemingly good business sense then. I did not know it's an industry standard to have giant murals in office. As a lowly consumer I could not give a shit less what your offices look like. I applaud any business that can make money just by what they have hanging on the walls. Seems like a good gig.

i think there are more then a few people on both the yes and no side that are way to locked in to the crowd-funding bit. For different reasons one want the purity and the other like to see the day it fails for some reason. But as you say, at some point external clients will have to come to their offices and then you can´t have bare walls and basic furniture.
On the other hand most people in this thread it seems could not manage marketing if their life depended on it. So i think we simply have to accept that in their minds there are no rules of marketing.
I am illustrating by example the problems that will arise from remote crowd-micro-mangement of a project. disaster is what happens. Not that SC is not a distaster in its own right but micromanagement by crowd would just make it worse
after all think about? do most studios have a mural? yes then who is to say definitiveity that it not required?
also...if one is to mis-use funds is this REALLY what one would do? 'hey bob I have 15k want to go buy a boat? 'no I want to buy a huge mural of a spaceship and put it in the office lobby'
seriously?
The problem is you just can't compare this with companies that aren't crowdfunding. Really big difference yet you refuse to understand that. Actually CR loves people like you, easier to scam.
IMHO it just seems unseemly to spend (maybe) backer money on almost literal window dressing for your office before you have given your backers what they have backed.

Well I don't think it is for the backers benefit, in fact I would bet on it.
My money is that it is to fire up the imagination of the people who look at it who will primarily be developers working there and if it is in a public place for potential investors or visitors. The potential return on any investment might well go beyond the initial payment, backer funded or not.
As for it being tacky I disagree, I think it looks great and would love something on my office wall...although it is a bit big for my office.

Why not... did your pledge (oh never mind) did the pledges ever said the person buying it would have a executive chair in the company? I am sure some level did but 99% did not i feel secure in saying.
So this company work like every other company. And if the norm in the biz is that you need a good looking lobby to attract new talent, future investors and new partners... .. . How the hell can CIG be considered a AAA company when they never released a game? Personally I never see CR's company becoming AAA. I believe it will fail and become the biggest AAA Crowdfunding project to fail!

1. I never said that they are a AAA company
2. I am saying if a AAA company does something for a business reason that affects their bottom line and is part of their success why is it a crowdfunded project can not do the same thing?
what 'bench line' of a well run gaming company should we use as a model of what to do and not do? a company that doesnt have a banner in the lobby?

For us to decide what is or is not approprate to run a honest and deliberate effort of development it helps to have model companies to base it off of. So why not a AAA company.

It falls under the same sort of lockjaw ideas that suits fall under.
Now it is ofc not only what hangs on the walls... You can in theory get a awesome deal even if you make it in your garage. But it helps. It is makeup but for buildings. It might sound stupid but it is the cultural norm and you break that on your own risk... same way you take the risk if you go to work in a bank dressed in your favorite Black Sabbath t-shirt and acid-washed jeans. It could turn out well... Or you could get sent home with a stern warning and a days pay deduction.
He has already long failed the Triple A when he said he could deliver a 6 million dollar game, even the worst Indie dev could have pulled that off by now instead of one space station and some ships that are outsourced.
Every time i watch a video Chris is all giddy talking about his hollywood director roles building this game,he really is fascinated with being a REAL difrector,he wastes tons of time and money to live out that dream, not a big deal except it's not his money.
I think it was video 60 where he rambled on for more than 5 minutes about how he revolved cameras around and was doing movie like camera work,he was literally obsessed with being a Director, problem is never about the game but more about his obsession with acting out a Hollywood director's dream.
Just watch the first 10 minutes or so and you can really tell he is obsessed with his hollywood director's dream versus building a game.I am pretty sure he bored the other guy to DEATH.

it also helps get and retain talented employees. not specifically a mural but impressive lobby areas make employees feel like they are part of something special.
