Take a look at the Warcraft and Warhammer single player PC games. They are nearly identical, from character designs to the technology available to the players (some exceptions made for WH 40K which is scifi, but still has the trademark factions)

The Warhammer series is old, with its first version being released in 1983 (it was a board game at the time)

Warcraft's first version came out in 1995

AOC has a more direct threat in the shape of G&D(Gods&Heroes). This game is a MMORPG with ground breaking ideas, from Siege`s to Minions plus set in a world we can all relate to.Have you ever watched Jason And The Argonauts or wonder what it would be like to  follow an Ancient god and be rewarded for it.

Its a two horse race for me..

1 AOC looks great and has some good ideas but cant help thinking it will run on the same lines as GW,not really being a MMORPG.

2 G&H Rome and all its treasures await, mythical creatures, politics, the Colosseum, and the lands across the Mediterranean ie EYGPT,Greece and Mighty Carthage all awaiting brave adventurers.

Both these games have PVP G&H properly having more...

After following AoC for quite some time it would seem that AoC at it's core is more similar to WoW.  especially with the raiding, and PvE item importance.  Just a couple things I've gathered from the community portal that made me die a little inside.  It seems more and more every day that they're selling their mature content sticker rather than their gameplay. Oh well, hopefully they'll surprise me.

So far their PvP ideas are trying to be new but seem like they're loaded with flaws. hopefuly they'll surprise me there too.

By the way, by raiding, they don't mean like dungeon raiding, they mean when you creat a player city, and wait for the NPC city to start growing near it, then you raid this city, destroy it, and find the good loot. I think that sounds MUCH better than "Go into the dungeon, kill 50 mobs, then get to the boss, kill him and get the item."

AoC at least looks original unlike WH which is exactly like WoW.

I'd definately buy this game long before WoW2

Really its exactly like WoW? Of course, I mean, its in Alpha, not available to the public, and Mythic hasn't released even 50% of the info that will be released before beta. Alas, anything that starts to look decent is a WoW clone. I'll place my bet  that you're currently or once was a WoW fanboi. And on the topic of being original, WoW wasn't the slightest bit original, they just ripped off ideas from all other games and presented them in a form a 12 year old could understand.

I dare you to name 10 similarities WAR has with WoW, I mean c'mon if its EXACTLY like WoW 10 should be a gimme...

I'll help you with the first one...

    1. They both have War in their titles
  • AelfinnAelfinn Member Posts: 3,857

Well, Warcraft and Warhammer are drawing from nearly identical backgrounds, so a hell of a lot of similarities, especcially in terms of background and lore will inevitably exist.

Then again, the two games are being built on an entirely different basis, WOW was built around PvE, with PvP options slapped on, Warhammer is being built around PvP.

So, someone can list a lot of identical points, or a bunch of differences, it all depends on what you look at.

The plain and simple facts that apply to me and perhaps some others out there are:

    - Been playing MMO's since UO.

    - My current MMO is WoW.

    - I'm very bored of WoW and looking for something new.

    - Warhammer looks very similar to WoW and to switch to that wouldn't be much of a change, and that is what I'm looking for.

    - I'm really not big on PvP but I love me some PvE.

    - I saw a guy get his head chopped off in Age of Conan.  Now that is just icing on the cake right there!

    Sign me up for AoC!!!

That's what I was trying to get at. People look at the graphics of WAR in ALPHA, which only look mildy similair to WoW while it's still in development. I guess you can be correct in saying it looks like WoW, because by looking at it I can see how you think of WoW. However, the gameplay is going to be entirely different. WoW has a decent PvE system until you reach 60, where its constant farming instance. WoW's PvP is a total failure.

Mythic already proved to be good at implementing PvP systems in DAoC, and I believe that if you're looking for a better PvP game, it's going to be WAR.

I've been following both games and I just saw the new Warhammer Video. What a Joke. I was planning on checking the game out but not after seeing that. So, unless things change over at WAR, I'm going with AoC.
  • ChraneChrane Member Posts: 23

I agree.  Granted, its really early but that Warhammer video was comical to me.

Hit...Hit...Knocked Down...Hit.  LOL.  Very slow and didn't look fun.  My bro and I both watched it and we looked at one another and starting laughing.

  • spartan33spartan33 Member Posts: 42
The video was taken from NPC's fighting each other in ALPHA. Of course it's going to be boring, just watching two computers auto attack each other. In WoW, watching Npc's fight each other wouldn't be any more interesting. The purpose of the video wasn't to show an intense PvP video, it was to show that the world in Warhammer actually existed.

It seems like everyone is judging a game that still has about a year left in development. People, it's not like you automatically start with the best graphics, and the most entertaining combat. With over a year to go in development, things will obviously change. Isn't AoC already in Beta, and will be released in the summer of '07. Sure AoC looks like a good game, but WAR isn't even in beta, so you can't compare the two. AoC will be released months before WAR.

Being in the AoC forum, being that one game is in beta and one game still has a year left in development, and given that people think pre-beta footage is what the game will look like upon release, I deem this thread retarded.
  • ChraneChrane Member Posts: 23
Nobody said we think this game will look like the alpha video.  I believe if you read my post, I even admitted it was early on with this video.  That still doesn't take the comical value out of that crappy video however.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the whole premise of this thread is idiotic!

WoW v. WAR, ok that makes sense cause they are pretty much fighting for the same audience, and there is obvious stylistic similarities (WARHAMMER came first youngters, its been said before but let me repeat: WoW and all the Warcrafts were blatantly styled after the Warhammer game, just because WoW was the first MMO you played doesn't make it the yardstick by which all MMO's are measured)

WoW v. AoC is idiotic for the exact same reason.

AoC is going for a different audience, are going with a completely different style, and the devs have specifically said that they are not going to try and be a WoW-killer, and the community is more than happy if WAR is a huge success and takes all of the dissatisfied WoW players, WE DON'T WANT THEM!

Yeah you acknowledged it was early, and I didn't specifically target it at you . Theres been others though who claim that the alpha video ruined the game for them. I bet if they saw alpha vids from the games they play at the moment, they would have said the same thing. Sure, the WAR alpha video was crappy, but it really wasn't meant to be entertaining. People expect some loud music, fast paced PvP in a video. Well there was no PvP, nor was there really any attempt of making the video entertaining. It was Mythic's first gameplay footage to the public, and it was to show that world actually existed.

People who judge a game soley off of its alpha video should die in a fire
  • ChraneChrane Member Posts: 23

I agree with ya.  You certainly can't judge the quality of a game based on a Alpha video.

I agree that it looks more impressive. However notice that it uses the epic movie music, a guy on horseback, a city ablaze, and the dramatic scene of some washed up people on the shore. Also they made the combat more dramatic by putting it in slow-mo, and they did a birds eye view of the zone.

In the WAR alpha video, they just showed npc vs npc combat, just auto attacking. No dramatic music, no slowmo combat, no one mounted, no dramatic scenes. You can't compare the two, the AoC video was meant to entertain, like a trailer. The WAR one just proof that the world existed. A dramatic runescape trailer could probably be more impressive then two npcs in AoC autoattacking each other.

Wait for a good edited, dramatic WAR trailer style video and you can compare videos.

If you select open PvP-server in AoC, then you can have PvP with everyone and in anywhere. Becouse of this, AoC will be much more PvP-based game then WAR. But yes, I'm also very happy that there is WAR, since all WoW-kids can go to there and have fun with it. I'll go to open PvP server in AoC and will start PvP from my first day. There will be 20 PvP-levels and you can even loot Blood Coins from dead opponents. In open PvP-server it will be chaotic PvP-war 24/7 and it will be everywhere when players try to kill each other to get BS. That will be insanely fun and challenging for all.

For me those videos of WAR just looked very boring and when that guy started to talk about questing ans such, it seemed even more terrible then in WoW. Seriously who enjoys "get me 10 heads of mob X"-type quests? It's just boring grinding and I got enough that when I played WoW.

I've been following Age of Conan for almost 2 years, but I have to say that I'm getting more and more interested in WAR (Age of Conan doesn't seem to be as "hot" on PvP as I would like) Then again, Funcom isn't run by EA either.

I'm going to play AoC on release, I'm going to keep an eye on WAR though.

Hey, all of you WAR fanboys saying stuff like "PvP in AOC will be zonebased" etc. Well same in WAR. In WAR, there will be a set place in each area in which PvP occurs, everywhere else it will be normal PvE. So do the research on your own game before you try to crash on others.
