You honestly, believe that I truly enjoy the NGE? You honestly believe that I enjoyed watching my profession (Smuggler) evaporate in uniqueness and skill and to watch my wifes dual profession (BE/CH) simply vanish over night? You think I enjoy a semmi-FPS over what we had?
You can't stop to think that maybe, just maybe there was another reason? Because I tell you there was....friends. I have developed friendships over the last three years on there. When the CU came out we lost a few in our guild (One of the oldest on Bloodfin). Ok we said we picked up ourselves resigned to our losses and moved on.
Then the NGE hit.
Over night this old guild went from 85 3 year vets to 2. Me and one other. Needless to say it has taken nearly 9 months to get back on our feet and slowly see the returnof some of our folks (6 so far).
No, I do not like the NGE. Never have, but I stayed because of my friends which are more precious to me than anything in this world. But after I show them what was said, our guild Copper Dune, may just evaporate for good and those friends will move on to other games. We may keep in touch, but it will never be the same again.
Well that is not what I wanted to happen. You know Smedley hung himself out for me... at least know he is that kind of guy.
I think like he said, we will never know that all the calls were not made by him.
We all here loved our profs, (Chef/BIO Jedi Knight of the old ways..) Most of us lost our guilds, large and small, cities, but yes... your anger (that I now see) is what we are doing here.
Expressing it.
Today some things happend, Smedley stuck his nose out for the little guy in the grand scheme of things.. however you heard the truth more so loud and clear now.
I wish you chose a different path.. but so be it.
You have to admit, it is kinda cool Smedley responds and is honest when he can be, I give him that again.. I'm still pissed but I do give him that.
(Note:) No way in Hell can he say that on the SOE boards... not a chance in flaming Hell, the game would spiral I think so fast that he would be sued or crap even us maybe. Who knows..
None the less, I kept my word but it cost someone-- somthing.
I have gotton some emails and PMs already on this as I knew I would... Since these emails have been the most candid and honest words Smedley has said in a while. I guess he is trying to be positive about it now and move on.
Like he said he would like to join the debate, but hes right... Even myself would be asking for a roleback and that is being honest. (knowing it can't happen even).

"It was a business decision based upon a declining playerbase." All games lost players to WoW.
"Ordinarily I would be happy to engage in a debate, but every time the discussion turns into “why not do a rollback”.. which just isn’t practical and isn’t going to happen" Not a rollback, classic servers. I understand a rolback creates all sorts of problems, but a fresh pre cu server shouldnt be so hard to set up. And a possible debate could start with why it is not going to happen. More subscribers = more money to SOE, LA. Or what is the problem with that simple rule.

2)We should have engaged the playerbase. Springing it on them while well intentioned was not a good idea. This is my single biggest regret and the thing I feel worst about.
3)It was a business decision based upon a declining playerbase. One thing that’s lost in this discussion is that with the playerbase leaving we had to do something. It’s great to get emails from players where they say SWG before the NGE was the greatest game ever, but the declining playerbase told us something different.
4)I believe the fundamental design of SWG had some bad flaws right from the start. The # of professions was certainly one of the problem areas. It made balancing and making the game interesting extremely difficult.
5)After this experience.. simply put.. I wouldn’t have gone with the NGE if I had to do it over again. Unfortunately in this case we aren’t the only decision makers.

I do appreciate the bluntness of his letter and not PR spin. I will give him that much.
Look folks, if you want to play, by all means play. Let NO ONE on this or any other board tell you otherwise. Give it a shot and test it out for yourself. You may love it, you may not. You are your own best judge.
I have no time to express anger constantly over and over on daily basis on these boards. Its a waste of time to me, but if if some enjoy doing it then by all means let it fly. But I have noticed alot of really disgusting comments in here over the last few months, from both sides of the house, and there is NO reason for that. There is such a thing still as civility and common courtesy. There is no reason to resort to name calling and spiteful comments. Engage in debate. If you have facts show them to educate others, if its your opinion say so. But do not try to pass opinions and rumors off as fact. That will hurt your rep more than anything out in the real world.
I enjoy a good healthy debate and look forward to many more ahead on here and other boards.

Osen man I know what your saying and man, I would love that to happen... but listen, I have asked countless times and the right people even. They can't do it without losing more money. I WANT IT... but I fear we won't see it. Another game will be made I will think to fill this void. I also know that Mr. Smedley is not the only person calling the shots on this. Without detail you should be able to see that, I am not saying it can't happen, but I am saying in my field of I.T. this would be almost impossible due to all the original coders that left. Look, I lost alot of friends in the game too, I kept the close ones as we still play games together.. but it is what it is. The NGE is a failure, now all they can do is ride it out. I actually think business wise that is all you can do at this point of investment.

Yes i see and understand Smedley is not the only person calling the shots on this. And you may very well be correct about the business part.
But, the new subscriptions it would generate and to somewhat save their damaged reputation could generate money for them in the long run. It is probably just not enough for these two big companies to even care.
And its not the loosing of friends for me as i, like you, have contact with the ones i played most with. But now we dont have a damned good game to play anymore.

Originally posted by iskareot Like he said he would like to join the debate, but hes right... Even myself would be asking for a roleback and that is being honest. (knowing it can't happen even).
He isn't being honest, he is avoiding the debate. There is a difference. What reason does he have that instituting classic servers would lose money? Is it because he would have to pay LA for second MMO? If that is the case, he should say so.
He admits that if a debate occurs, it will result in an overwhelming response for either a rollback (which I don't think is a good idea) or the institution of classic servers (which I definately support). One would assume, from such a result that it would be profitable to set up classic servers or a rollback. Yet, he refuses to do that, and just states that it would lose money, without providing the reasons why.
Edit: After re-reading Smedley's quote, he doesn't actually mention classic servers, just a rollback. I wish he would engage in a debate regarding that, as I do not support a rollback and I agree that after 10 months, it is impractical.
There's a basic truth that Smedley's boys will never own up to.
They sold hundreds of thousands of customers SWG as a game in a specific genre with a specific feature set.
Then, they didn't manage it very well. And its quality was a disappointment. And people started to leave.
They could either admit they didn't manage it well, or claim the design was 'unmanageable'. They chose the latter, and then abruptly told customers they were no longer going to try to make the game that hundreds of thousands bought, not even really the same genre, and this was because the game they bought was 'unmanageable.'
What they really meant is "We can't manage it ... and we think the only way TO manage it is to have more coders with better skills who are more expensive. So, we've decided it's too expensive to deliver the product you bought, and we're going to cut our costs and deliver a different product to you. VERY different."
But this is disingenuous. They couldn't manage it because ..... they're just not very good at it. They wasted resources, ignored key problems, and went off all over the place designing expansions that did NOTHING to improve the product's problems. They hyped movies and DVD's ... they were nice shiny Marketing ... but not a good use of resources to manage the game.
So everything Smedley and his crew says is "It's not our fault, it's the design."
BULL!
It's your fault. You dropped the ball, kicked it into the mud, and buried it, but it's not the BALL's fault!!
The only way Smedley can be honest is to say "I did a bad job, we did a bad job, we should have been fired for it."
So everything Smedley and his crew says is "It's not our fault, it's the design."
and whose fault was the design? Oh that's right.. $OE!

Yeah ..... not holding my breath on that one.
I do agree. IMO just hearing Smedley admitting the NGE was a mistake is a huge first step and him saying that, Smed may now have the attention of the alienated playerbase. I cannot speak for anyone else, but he has my attention, now lets see what he says next. And speaking of balls...(not that kind of balls) The preverbial ball is once again in Smeds court. He spoke something I never thought I would hear. I am still listening Mr. Smedley. Admitting the NGE was a mistake was a noble first step. And in the everyday act of walking, once you take the first step, you must go on to the next one or else you'll fall flat on your face. Smed spoke of the open to debate, but won't because all roads lead to the "rollback" card being played. Fine. No rollback. Just one classic server then. If they say they can't due to lack of code or they plain dont have it anymore, I'll call BS. Someone sure knows the code and knows how to get a server going.
Smed, you have the ball. I know you can take good step number 2. Give us what we all want. We want our game back, you want our money.

Osen man I know what your saying and man, I would love that to happen... but listen, I have asked countless times and the right people even. They can't do it without losing more money. I just don't think the thousands that left in utter disgust will come flocking back. I would have a really hard time trusting them again an many people feel the same.
This game will be part of the bumper bargain package of the station pass in my opinion. There just isn't going to be some great miracle patch classic server for a game of this age.
The resources for this game will dry up and the development an maintenance will be squeezed to a minimal level to keep it at least in the green.

Why should it shut Tracola up? He's not magically going to stop having fun with the game because of what Smedley said in his emails.
Originally posted by Tacola I have seen a number of people returning, yesterday my friends list was off the page for the first time since NGE hit!! The expertise trees need to come out faster, but they are differently helping the game IMHO. The crafting is still the best of all the MMORPG. With the trader revamp coming torward the end of this year, crafted goods will be back on par with loot. I think the game has made great improvements since last november when the NGE bomb hit. There is still alot of bitterness about what happened there. I feel their pain, I was full template jedi when it hit. If you left right after NGE I would say give it a try. It has changed a great deal since Pre-CU, CU and NGE first came out. But with target lock back and expertise trees, my Jedi is again a powerhouse. I have lost to a Bounty Hunter, but I am a tough kill. And the crafting experimentation itself was enough to make me come back. Recent experiences in the game have me liking it again. NOT TALKING ABOUT THE PAST but the present. This is still a very fun game to play, again IMHO. PVP , PVE , Space and crafting all still are here, and of course abunch of lightsabers, lol.
Wow, so they have introduced a crappy rip off of the World of Warcraft talent trees, for only two out of the nine professions. Crafting is the best, too bad since there is no decay on anything they are almost as useful as entertainers. They managed to bring back target lock, which people have been crying for since day one of the NGE. Also, don't buy into that talking about the future, not the past. This game had a good future once, and frankly, calling the NGE forward progress is like calling crap I just took better than the steak I ate yesterday.

The ship is indeed still sailing, but the seas are rough, a storm in on the horizon, the keel is cracked, the vessel is listing to port, the hull is taking on water, the bilge pumps aren't working, and there's no booty in the hold.

Needless to say it has taken nearly
9 months to get back on our feet and slowly see the returnof some of our folks (6 so far).
No, I do not like the NGE. Never have, but I stayed because of my friends which are more precious to me than anything in this world. But after I show them what was said, our guild Copper Dune, may just evaporate for good and those friends will move on to other games. We may keep in touch, but it will never be the same again.

Uh oh...sounds like the sheet hit the Ol Fan somewhere? Who lost what?
Yeah ..... not holding my breath on that one.
Shayde - SWG (dead)

But, the new subscriptions it would generate and to somewhat save their damaged reputation could generate money for them in the long run. It is probably just not enough for these two big companies to even care.
