That is a comparison piece to the original GW. Not sure why people keep bringing it up. It would almost be like comparing Diablo to WoW.

Why? Because it is one of the opinions that has a slightly different perspective (although not much). I know a lot of people don't like different persectives but I do.

Sure but they are entirely different style games. I mean would you bring an FPS player to review an RPG?

    Time to wake up MMORPG.

okay. so. this is how i read that.

1: he's complaining about a two day press alpha/beta being disorganized? his credibility takes a bump for being a mad person to expect otherwise. especially since it was for the press and thus people were just trying to experience as much of the game as possible.

2: he acknowledges that it's unoptimized, then spins around and complains that it doesn't work perfectly. okay, seriously? obviously a few fries short of a happy meal. another credibility bump.

3: he's comparing GW1's highly tactical, small scale pvp to mass all out, guns blazing, free-for-all, madhouse seige warfare? really? okay.

i don't know what to say. i'm not going to keep making cracks about his sanity (because he is obviously sane as evidenced by the rest of the article), but the pvp section just makes no sense. he clearly didn't have his expectations remotely in the same ballpark as what anet has consistently said they were aiming for, and for that... for that i can't accept a word he says about pvp in GW2. he even grades it based on how it measures to GW1! jeez. stop comparing the two! different games!

it was a comparison piece. the guy is a huge gw1 fan.

that much is obvious. and yeah i edited out that part of my post 'cause it really sort of wanders at the end there. i dunno. i just can't accept his arguments. even if it is a matter of personal preference, his arguments in the pvp section specifically are just... bad.

i didnt think they were bad. i think he was being honest. he related the game to a game he loves gw1.  most gamers will relate a new game to one that they love. i dont think he was trying to bash gw2 at all. i think he wrote a nice opinion based review.

    I've got the straight edge.

GW2 fans are already making the cardinal mistake of labeling their game as perfect in every area with zero flaws. The closed beta reviews are flat out jokes and done by long term fans of the game. Every review I have seen has been done by some 6 year player of Guild Wars with a financial incentive to make nice with ArenaNET.

All it will do is build blind hype and attract people to the game who should not be playing.

    LOL

I took off work today to watch all the videos and catch up on all the "goings-on" with this weekends press beta event and the only noticible Lag ive seen is from only a couple videos and you could tell they were running on old computers.  99% of every video ive watched today (about 7 hours so far) I have seen very little lag.

You see the difference between GW2 hype and SWTOR hype is one was founded and the other is most certainly not.  All it took was one ounce of google searching last year looking for bad reviews from SWTOR beta to see the game had issues.  Whereas only a select few haters gonna try troll what is obviously going to be a huge mega hit.  Will GW2 have some issues?  Yea I imagine its not for alot of people and as huge a fan as I am I still dont like a couple things about the game but those are a matter of opionon and not game breaking issues.

We get it that your not a fan, then go play something else.

First off its a She not a he, but as a fan of GW2 I felt this piece was very opinionated and reeked of GW1 elitism even though she tried not to show it.  For every negative (and there was a few regardless what she said in the comments section) I see it as a positive.

As much as it pains me to say, GW2 will not be for everyone.  I will tell you who it is for though:

    1. People who like themeparks but are sick of WoW clones (LOL SWTOR and TERA)

    2. People who want open persistance world to matter.

    3. People who despise gear grinds where only 10% of the population can participate in content, and 100% of development time is spent catering to those 10% of the players.

    4. People who want a Spiritual Successor to DAoC and all its RvR glory prior to the fail that was Trials of Atlantis.

Also, not that i care because i dont PVE anymore, but the collision is prolly one of the worse i have ever seen.  Sure its cool that the mobs charge you in a group and are not just standing around.  But when pretty much every mob is inside of eachother galloping along, that coolness all of a sudden starts to fade.

Thats my 2 cents after watching beta videos all morning,  I have no doubt that the lag issues will be mostly cleared up by release however the WvWvW lagging like that with 1/10 of the people its supposed to have has me very worried as this is my only reason for looking forward to this game (or any game in general.)

I can empathize with you to some extent, this is what frightened me, the lagginess of the WvWvW PvP.

When I watched the lag I was slightly turned off, but you just have to remember this is Beta. They are doing this to test for lag and bugs. Now if we see this kind of lag on release day I would be a little angry, but even that is to be expected in moderation when the servers will be flooded to hell with all these level 1's running straight into PvP to level to 80. lol

I am expecting lag from day 1 of release, to expect it to be perfect with that amount of people packed in one area right from day 1 is unrealistic. Just keep our fingers crossed that they do proper testing and fix these issues as much as possible so the game is at least playable upon release.

so what your saying is GW2 in a early beta is about as good as Star Wars is 3 months after release?

  • MetzaMetza Member Posts: 160

I have seen some of the lag the OP talks about, but at the same time most of that lag is hard to tell if it is the rig+fraps or just the server or a combo of both, the game mechanics are what I took from these videos, I will wait to judge the performance on my own pc once I play it, hopefully in open beta, if there are serious issues with lag I'm sure they will be addressed though, how fast will that be is another story but thats something we will have to find out, and imo there are 2 main reasons they wanted to do the press beta, one-for the publicity it created with every member of the press talking about it today, and most saying pretty decent things. Two- the servers are probaly not ready to handle the mass public yet and that means they know that, so it was a win-win situation for Anet.

A little lag does not scare me off from this game, until I experience something awful during my own experience on my own system that I know should run the game properly and without any 3rd party programs running.

I'm with you. I wouldn't expect any miracles before launch.

There will be re-written code, better hardware drivers available, and overall progress made in improving performance, but we're still talking massive battles here. You might see a few hundred people in one small area in WvW. With all of the particle effects, siege engines, player movement etc. that is a lot of information.

Hopefully as WvW gets better, and teams become more organized, you'll see smaller battles spread out more evenly on the maps. Breaking up the zerg is the greatest performance gain to be had, but until then, expect to need a beastly rig to handle 500 players all breaking through a heavily defended fortress wall. That's not changing any time soon.

Yes apparently. Lag is lag. And the game is in Alpha?? What is that for an excuse when the game is supposed to be launched in June. No way in hell this baby makes the shelves before the summer.

Read the comments under PvP. That has little to do with comparison and is the most relevant to the discussion in this thread. He says WvWvW is a laggy mess and that his computer was spewing out smoke by the end of the session. Same thing OP pointed out. If they hammer out these issues I might get the game. But I am quite sure it will not be in shelves before end of 2012.

You asume too much. You assume that 'they' are upset because GW2 turns out to be better than SWTOR and then you say you have no agenda here. Hell i am not even into SWTOR and never went any further than beta but i am sick of people like you.. the rabid fanbase who are more interested in slinging mud at each other than have an actual discussion.

Looks like my ignore list is going to be huge in GW2. Where the hell are grown ups in gaming comunities these days?

this is really nothing - 1 thread discussing if 2 gamesites experience with performance is an indicator for GW2 having problems or not

    - its not 20 threads a day, it relative mild in conflict and bashing- i am telling you to relax , becuase this is really nothing compared to forum PvP in many other cases.

People still haven't learned to use a capture card to record video so they dont fuck up their fps in games?

It's not like they are that expensive anyway. You can get one that records at 720p for like 100 euros.

His system bites to be blunt. I'm sure his system was smoking.  Can't imagine adding Fraps to that as well. Ouch.

Are you argueing that there was no real performance drop when too many players were on the screen? I'm confused what you're trying to argue here. I really hope you're not blind to the *fact* that every single video of the massive PvP had enormous drops in FPS when they were drawing too many characters. Even the PvE events with the centaurs had a large amount of lag for some. Their computers could be p90's, but it doesn't let ArenaNet off the hook for the dramatic FPS drop during large scale fights.

I'm not saying that the game is crap because of the current FPS, but I am saying that it is alarming with so few people in this beta that people were expierencing that amount of lag.

Are you going to to respond to all the IGN and GW2Online videos that DON'T have FPS drops, nullifying your comments above?

  • sgelsgel Member EpicPosts: 2,197

There were a few vids that had fps/lag problems... the vast majority didn't... I don't know what your problem is?

They other had dated PCs or didn't know how to record videos (to quote TB).

Anyone that has a problem with what they see in the game?

    Just, don't, play it.

If you don't understand the concept of a game thats not even got a release date, allowing footage like this to come out for its fans and all you can do is speak negatively about it?

    Its not, for, you.
