I do not like the blades and spikes on the instruments. I really like the gargoyle and tail idea. The pipes with the flames looks really cool.

You would have to be able to learn a base line of all crafting skills. If not, how would you level your character if you did not make traps or siege engines. I agree with ZinZan on how the properties should be added to gear.

Did the older Ultima games have levels? Maybe he is mixing part of his Ultima Online story with one of the older games. The story where he gets lured out of town sounds like something that would happen in Ultima Online.
