From what I have read, the ships you buy can be blown up and never recovered. If thats true, this is even more funny. I get you will say boats can be broken as well but the difference is the point of the game is to blow up peoples ships. Thats not the goal of boats in the real world.
I do not think that is accurate no.
I am all on the side of 'several thousand dollar virtual ships are silly' but then suggesting that there is basically no such thing as a vanity product is just being silly.
why is it impossible for critics of SC to not be the least bit polarized.
There are some things about the SC project that I think are silly and some I am rock on about, polarized is just foolish
Ships that dont have insurance will be lost when they blow up. As one poster put it, dont fly what you dont want to lose.

I still think that is incorrect. In that you can recover them from in game activities.
Never the less in case you didnt know buying these virtual ships is more of a donation. The ships themselves will become fairly easy for new players to get once the game is released.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Virtual goods typically have an increasing sales value. I bet you didnt know that.
I would love to hear how you are reselling your virtual Star Citizen ships for a profit. What I know about this game, is that there's no opportunity to resell those things for real life money. Are we wrong?
I just love how everyone took my point to be about value... people spend this kind of money on things that are literally sent down the toilet a few hours later... deserts, beverages, entree's. etc... It has nothing to do with value, it's all about ego boosting..
I understood your point but the "who's laughing now" part? It's still us laughing at the $20K handbags, $50K rings and $2500 spaceships. Or do you think the conspicuous consumers have the upper hand and shouldn't be laughed at?

There was a story on the local news here a month or two ago, about a fellow who stood in line for 3 days at a specialty liquor store and purchased a $36,000.00 bottle of Scotch. When the reporter interviewed him after he purchased the bottle, he cracked it open and had a shot.
Easy come easy go, as they say. I work too hard for my money to spend it that frivolously.
I could buy two ships a month with the amount of expendable income I have each month
HA!
Your parents credit cards has limits too.
Do you believe there are vanity products outside of the digital virtual world that are obviously bad investments outside of ego or do you think that only exists in the virtual spaces??

Your assuming that they make ships fairly easy to get. For all we know they could take months to grind out a new 1 seater fighter with the intention of pushing you towards the cash shop to avoid the grind.

Here's the thing, in percentages what these folks are spending, isn't much different than what we are on our frivolous endeavors.. To them it was no more expensive than me taking my wife out for The force awakens and drinks afterward + taxi rides to and fro + the gifts I got her for her birthday which was the same day....

I have tasted things worth more then should be ok to spend money on. My grandfather was rich. Used to take me out for dinner when he visited. I can say this. Food that costs that much often is not worth the price. If I wanted my wine to have the after taste of hickory wood and cigars, I would just dip a cigar and a chuck of hickory wood in a $100 bottle of wine. Yes, after tasting the finer things in life, I can say that type of person can be laughed at as well.

For me its more like a car crash. You cant help be watch something thats messed up. For many, watching them sell ships for thousands of bucks is messed up, but seeing people buy them is even more fun to watch. Im fine with people spending their money how they want but it still worth a chuckle. Go on and get mad at me, but you heard me. Im laughing at you =D
Meh people walk around with $65,000 rocks on their fingers, and 25k handbags...
Ok, lets paint a picture, in one hand I have rings worth 65k and I have in the other a code that gives you 65k worth of digital space ships. What one do you want me to give you? Second question, 20 years from now what one do you want to be holding? Ya, I stand by my point, fun to watch. I really hope they get the game they want =-)
All this Ship sales brainwashed the people to think that these Assets are really worth any money. In fact they are not, they are assets that can be spawned at the developers will > Indefinitely (or until your Computer burns down). Sure you could say it is worth my playtime weighted up what I get per hour from my employer but Playtime is not Worktime, if you start to think that way then there is a spare place in a chinese basement for you. On top of that - if the developing company decides just to switch off their servers for whatever reason, then you are left with nothing.
Real world stuff is expensive cause it's rare and/or exclusive. You can sell some of the rare/exclusive stuff later on (try with gold; don't try with edible stuff after consumed). Did you notice the SC Black Market Bubble? It popped when the people actually realised that there is nothing rare or exclusive in the game.
In Kickstarter you can pledge for something and maybe get something in return. This is a Concept Shop for a game you do not own. And the customers (not backers they are buying stuff not giving money) love it - they love to spend all their spare money for the next great starship concept (or Asset in a game they do not own).
CIG can only sell their ships because they have a monopol on it and they are controlling 100% of the stock, with this in mind - to push sales - I would release a demo where cheap ships are as boring as watching a stone grow and expensive multiplayer ships are something that everyone now wants cause they are fun! All this for my fans, that they forget that they are buying something that has no value.
Don't get me wrong, this game looks nice, they are using the allegorithmic substances which is a good decision. The IK is rubbish and it will be a hell to fight the Z-fighting (which is very immersion breaking), ok there is near to no gameplay and there is the controller issue and they are using 33Bit precision (and sell it for 64bit precision) but there is no excuse for this abysmal Business plan to milk customers with an addiction.

I do have kids but how I feel about conspicuous consumption predates that by decades... I guess I'm just someone who isn't looking to show off and I don't have a high opinion of those who are. If that's being judgmental lol, well so be it. I do have good judgement I think.

Let's see if we are biased or if Star Citizen is.
Disney Them Park in Paris:
-you're not seeing the money back
-it's purely luxury, it's not a necessity, you are spending to be entertained
It's not the same as Star Citizen.
1. It actually exists, you're not spending on something that might or might not fail.
2. The amount of money you spend to be entertained is not $25,000
