^ "It all went as planned! After the long weekend of manual merge conflict resolutions as well an enormous code review, we are now on a single dev stream this week!"
Unless Illfonic was lying, the code bases of Star Marine and Star Citizen were successfully merged (as their own words) last year and it became a single dev stream. If the codebases were incompatible and that was the problem then Illfonic wouldn't have reported they successful merged into SC's code.
Remember when Roberts was touting how this modular approach to design was so grand, and how it would help the game development so? Yay, well. I pretty much predicted it would blow up on them. <snip>
What? You know software design has been modular since at least the eighties right? Lots of non-software stuff as well for that matter.
I'm sure it works well if competently handled.....
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Speculation > Facts.
You seem to be paraphrasing and omitting certain key words. Here I'll quote the relevant part for you
"As we wrap up the staging merge this week, we go into final integrations of the Global Instance Manager that was recently deployed with the Social Module update. Some folks are going to work on this final merge step this coming weekend in order to make ready a code review based on the merge. If all goes as planned, we’ll be on a single dev stream early next week! Great news for the overall project."
You also got it backwards it's Facts > Speculation but given that your post had some lovely bits of misinformation I guess your speculation is greater than facts holds true.

Not to mention the fact that if it worked then where the hell is it? Chris said it would be out a few months before that post was made. And here it is a year later still don't have nothing. Yea that post about the successful merge was a year ago. An acceptable time for it to actually launch.
Maybe they just scrapped the whole thing because it sucked. If that was the case they should have be upfront about it.
If you read the "Letter of the Chairman" link I posted above - they were upfront about it. Not up to our expected standards is a nicer way of saying It Sucked.

I don't know that I buy that. They can playtest long before everything is in place, that should give them a good idea of whether it's fun or not, dropping it at the very last minute with the "It's not fun" just sounds like a bit of excuse for failing to do what they wanted to do and he doesn't want to say that outright.
Besides, he was happy to use it as their marketing campaign through 2015, happy to use it as a focal point and demo it at a couple of conventions and happy to take people's money on the back of it.

In my opinion that was at a time when CR still expected Illfonic to solve any remaining problems. Which they did not - so CIG pulled the FPS development back in house.
I guess we'll never know all of what happened, and it's pretty irrelevant now anyhow. I'm more interested in seeing what they've done between then and now on Star Marine, perhaps they'll be showing something at Gamescom?
To my knowledge Star Marine will be shown in Köln at GamesCom by CIG. If visitors can play it freely on the computers on the Idris bridge (=CIG booth) is the more interesting question.
gervaise1 said: What? You know software design has been modular since at least the eighties right? Lots of non-software stuff as well for that matter.
Sure, network layer isn't a module tho. It is a fundamental part of the engine, you can't just "add it later".
Which is why they would have known from the beginning what they needed to do. Its making them look like they are lying more then anything right now. Sure they might have changed the network layer in the middle of the project but noone thought hey maybe we should tell them since they absolutely NEED to know this. Hey BTW we aren't going to use the 3 prong plug for this but the 4 prong. Come on this is elementary stuff.

You are free to check the FPS updates Illfonic made after, dealing with post-merge development, obviously implies the code was merged (there's even changelogs post merge).
On this thread it's Speculation > Facts because people are claiming the merge failed yet Illfonic reported otherwise and continued to work on SM post-merge.
Eh we are talking about years now. Still not buying that crap how CIG didn't bother to tell them what Star Marine was going to be running on. Its like hey build me an engine for an automobile. First thing you would do is ask what kind of automobile. They completely ignored the first question any program writer needs to ask before they can begin writing.
They branched off the code.
You start working on an automobile. Then you say "Hey Illfonic, go design the glass panes for the windows." They are working on the glass panes, while someone else is working on the metal frame. Meanwhile, a lot of changes happen to the metal frame, the shape of the car is a Lamborghini instead of the initial school bus. 6 months later, Illifonic arrives "Tadaa, here are the windows." Someone looks at the shape of the windows and the shape of the car, for the first time ever. "But Frank, these windows don't fit the Lamborghini." "Well fuck."
Except for the fact that Star Marine was suppose to be much more then just the windows. It was suppose to be part of the frame itself and be completely integrated with the entire project. They planned to use Star Marine for everything in the First Person view. From walking to flying to shooting guns to melee and all the animations. It was a core part of the game and they somehow ignored it to the point they couldn't even use it. So the project that was suppose to help complete a game didn't even know what they were building it for. I guess now they are happy to be spread all across the Earth for the sake of having the best teams.
Why wait until the 17th-21th August (GamesCom, Cologne, Germany) when new information on Star Marine can be expected ?
But how much of the information passed at GamesCon will actually be true or make it into the game anytime soon? <snip>
No need to speculate.
Its a two edged sword. It cuts through bullshit but is sharp enough to harm the wielder.
If you had watched the presentation from last year and then played the current build you would see there is very little to harm the wielder.

Well dude IDK why you keep comign back to the fact that they successfully inegrated it. This proves that Chris lied because he said it would be out and they have been sitting on it for over a year now. According to your facts that is.
So basically all those people who are defending CIG right now are lying. Well that is what you are saying anyways.

Well dude IDK why you keep this drama campaign surrounding SM, one would say it almost feels as one weird cult behavior, as you are on some sort of mission.
It proves nothing but the speculation that SM did not released because the code bases were incompatible was NOT the cause for why Illfonic's work suffered refactoring. Speculation is not facts, most of what you are doing here is using your imagination to speculate on things that are not known.

Funnily enough, the unofficial line from fans on the official forums, the subreddit and here for the last year was that the merge was unsuccessful and that CIG were just going to incorporate whatever assets they could.

Again dude. Star marine is not the FPS mechanics in the game. Star Marine is literally the mode that pits 2 teams against each other on a map designed for competitive play (gold horizon) with a scoreboard and lobby system.
This has been stated time and time again I don't get what is so difficult to understand about this??

It was suppose to be. That was what they were working on. That changed when they messed this up so bad or they simply lied about it. So going into this project that was the plan for it to be core function of the game. But now we have someone saying it was properly integrated but there's no explanation why Chris never launched it.
Which brings us to the question why some of you guys care too much.
I think I will play Bullshit Bingo the next time I come here and read the same arguments and the same bias and the same "I told you so!"
With GamesCom approaching and the alphas rolling at a steady pace certain individuals or one individual on these boards are desperate to keep the negativity towards SC flowing. Since there are no fresh "negative" news around resurrecting a year old topic and bring it to the spotlight again was the only way to go.

Not true, there's no shortage of negativity. It's manufactured out of the same factory as bullshit, so there's no shortage. If you don't believe me, just look at this thread. Even when the game is released there will ultimately be no shortage of people telling us that it isn't released.

Why do you keep saying illfonic? The supposed code merge was going to happen the weekend of September 5 but CIG had posted back in August that they were pulling everything in house.
And really if the code bases were merged then why didn't they just release SM for people to see? They have no problem releasing buggy crap since they released arena commander
It would help if we had clear answers to simple questions. Notice that those defending Chris's decision are the ones who put out the false excuses. Yet noone is able to clearly say why it wasn't launched like he said. He did say 5 weeks and it appears they successfully integrated it about 4 months later but they never launched it.
