I /sign with the OP. Lineage2 definitely deserves a re-review. The game's come a long way since release and it's only getting better.. and all expansions come free of charge. ^.^

The Game is for: 1. Hardcore Gamers I do not say L2 is 'hardcore' because of the grind. I say it because of the time it takes to succeed and resultingly, the amount of respect you earn once you do succeed. If you're a hardcore player you want to stand out from the average crowd and have something to show for it.. L2 gives you plenty of opportunities to do that. While some may argue that 'Hardcore' should be purely about skill.. I argue that it's both time and skill. You can'y play professional piano without practicing 8 hours a day no matter how gifted you are. The logic applies even moreso to gaming 'cause there definitely isn't as much to it skill-wise.
2. Politics Freaks Ask any high-lvl L2 player why they stick around and they'll tell you it's the politics. If you love inter-clan drama and the post-battle forum trashtalk than L2 is for you. People get so emotional over this game it's ridiculous. (Check out l2orphus.com or l2blah.com if you don't believe me.. two forums entirely dedicated to trashtalk.)
The Game is NOT for:
1. PvE players If you want to play for PvE, don't bother with L2. The quests are terrible, crafting is a joke, and the grind can get unbearable at times. I treat L2 PvE simply as a necessary evil to strengthen my char for PvP ..and for e-ego. There's no e-ego like L2 e-ego that's for sure hehe. Oldschool EQ-style players that look for PvE/Raids type gameplay should stick to WoW or EQ2 ^.^
2. Casual Gamers If you can only put in 8-10 hours a week or less into L2, chances are you'll have a hard time getting past your 50s and will therefore never see the core of the game: mass PvP and castle sieges. You'll only ever see the grind and the generally terrible L2 PvE content. Unless you have infinite patience and enjoy torturing yourself for long-time goals, find another MMO. L2 will drive you insane.
I love L2 but it's got more than enough of its share of faults. I understand it's a niche game and I expect most people to never understand its attraction. But if you love it.. you'll LOVE it.. and you'll never know if you love it until you've gone deep into it yourself.

EDIT: I see you like to have a boxed game, but if you do buy the boxed version you're still gonna have download C1, C2 AND C3, which is more data than the original game. I lost my bought copy lol and thank goodness you can just download it now. I HATED Lineage 2 back when it came out, me and my gf played for about 3 months before I just said that's enough! But boy they have spiced this puppy up a TON since then! New everything basically. I love quests especially in a game that takes a lot of exp to level, and the quests made me love it again.
Lineage 2 can be underated sometimes(mostly from the people who scared to take the time to lvl). Believe me, I am truly a casual gamer, when the game first released in retail version. Took me 2-3 months just to get to 20(but it was fun ) then I made a new char without rerolling and took another 2-3 months(this time a dwarf so ten times harder). Finally, I got bored cause my rl friends quit until the free buddy key month trial thing. My friends and I exchanged them from our newsletters and started playing again. This time I got to lvl 20 in less than a month! And this was not in the summer like the time it took me 2-3 months to get to 20! I was amazed and plus that was only Chronicle 2. Chronicle 3 is out and it is so easy to get to 30's it scares me. 30+ is when some PvP action starts to take place but 40+ is even more.
I quit now though since my friends quit again lol. Peer pressure . Anyway, I recommend Lineage 2 not because of the easier grind though, but because of the PvP. It is very political and if your in a guild, and have a rival guild, prepare for many PvP run-ins. The world is huge too(you can hide if your scared ). And the good ol' music is amazing. Usually I listen to my Ipod when playing mmos but for Lineage 2, didn't need to. Though, I do not recommend for the people who thinks this game suxs just cause many cheaters(it is fun to train them, maybe get some good items ).

You show a screenshot of a high level armor suit for L2, and then the very first armor set you get in EQ2. Also, the EQ2 screenshot of the guildhouse is about 3 years old and PRE beta. You screenshot comparing could use some work.
EDIT: Excuse me, the screenshot of EQ2's building is from Freeport I think, and it is current. Still though, there is much better looking buildings.
Yea you're right I just went to the EQ2 site and linked the first character screenshot I saw I'd love to see good EQ2 screenshots tho if you don't mind linking some. ^.^
Some of you might want to take a closer look. Even with the basic armor in the EQ2 screenshot it clearly shows how much better the EQ2 graphic engine is compared to L2. Look at the arms of the characters, notice how angular they are? This is precisly what I was referring to when I mention L2 made crappy models. The only thing they put any amount of polys into are the Tits and Ass. Now look at the EQ2 model, you will notice the arms are round and reasonably natural looking. Also take the time to notice that the Armor in L2 does not Sit on the character, but is rendered as part of the character model. In EQ2 you can clearly see the Armor has Depth and sits on Top of the character model, and does not look like a fancy paint job.
As far as the plastic comment, first off I agree its one of the things I found irritating about EQ2. However do not confuse Texture with Graphics. If someone took the Same graphics engine in EQ2 and retextured it, the graphics in EQ2 blow anything on the current market away if they simply textured it right. L2 graphics at Best are on par with EQ1.
Everquest 2 might have better graphics because it was made later than Lineage 2. For me, as long as graphics are good(I don't care if they ultra amazing) than I am fine.

That is a perfect stance. To want good graphics is a fine, in this day and age of hardware and gaming we should Expect Good graphics out of games. However those attempting to state that L2 has better graphics then EQ2 are just dead wrong and the screenshots prove it. Its about absurd to try and compare the two graphically as there is no comparison.
Now From a texture perspective, I agree L2 did a much better overall job with their textures. Heck I will be the first one to Slam EQ2 over their lousy textures as I effectively has the same looking armor from level 20 to 50, even half my Fabled Gear looked the bloody same as crap I had.

Dek, I'm not sure I understand you when you say the arms are more 'angular' .. I believe that's just the style of the armor? To me the EQ2 model looks bulky and awkward while the L2 one is more graceful.. although admittedly more stylized. (But that comes down to preference).
I understand that L2 graphics aren't modelling heavy and they prefer to do most depth-work through texturing.. which is fine by me since it seems to allow more detail without adding to lag.

Well I just took some screenshots of Freeport and Qeynos. I would have got some more shots of armor but I did not run into any high levels. It was night in Freeport so its a little harder to see.

This shot is beatiful in day time, because the light flows through the windows into the room.
Findical- Lvl 33 Barbarian Berserker. His breast plate looks like crap, but its better in stats then the one that goes with the armor set.
Qeynos- It was raining in all of these shots, but it is kinda hard to see in some of them.
Thats all of them. In my opinion EQ2 is by far better in graphics then L2. The armor in EQ2 is a bit more realistic, there is no spikes coming from your hips or ankles. Freeport and Qeynos are magnificent, they are huge and are both very well engineered.
After taking all these screenshots I realized how much I like EQ2. I almost got killed taking one of those screenshots after trying to take my berserker to a waterfall for a good shot.

Specifically look at the arm's in the Elbow region. you will notice the shape of the arm's are diamond shaped in regards to the circumfrence of the arms, where as the EQ2 ones are rounded. Again I am making reference to the model it's self, and its not an armor texture here that is shaped by the base model.
I wish I had not wiped my hard drive when I uninstalled EQ2 I had some excellent High res pictures that really showed off how impressive the engine was. Its just a pity that the EQ2 art team was as uninspired as they were when it came to armor texture, I will give you that L2 hands down has far better looking armor as far as texture is concerned. Leave it like this, Let the L2 art team, get ahold of the EQ2 engine and character models and you would in fact have the most visually stunning game on the market hands down.
A lot of people who played and quit have really torched this game. Complaining of hackers and grindfest. Thats not an enviroment most of us want to be in. If so many are complaining about these two topics then that suggest its a valid point.

If only we could mix and match MMOs the way we mix and match clothes! I could so go for an MMO that combines somthing like.. WoW quest content + Saga of Ryzom NPC/Mob/Environment programming + L2 art , PvP and flying mounts + AO character implants and stat system + CoH customization .. etc etc

I think maybe he meant you could try it on a private server or something. Personally I think private servers are a waste of time so I think what you did is best.

That is a perfect stance. To want good graphics is a fine, in this day and age of hardware and gaming we should Expect Good graphics out of games. However those attempting to state that L2 has better graphics then EQ2 are just dead wrong and the screenshots prove it. Its about absurd to try and compare the two graphically as there is no comparison.
Now From a texture perspective, I agree L2 did a much better overall job with their textures. Heck I will be the first one to Slam EQ2 over their lousy textures as I effectively has the same looking armor from level 20 to 50, even half my Fabled Gear looked the bloody same as crap I had.
I understand that L2 graphics aren't modelling heavy and they prefer to do most depth-work through texturing.. which is fine by me since it seems to allow more detail without adding to lag.
I'm still not convinced EQ2 graphics are any 'better' than L2.. the feel of the EQ2 world and characters just isn't upto par. Need to see better screenshots!

Well I just took some screenshots of Freeport and Qeynos. I would have got some more shots of armor but I did not run into any high levels. It was night in Freeport so its a little harder to see.

This shot is beatiful in day time, because the light flows through the windows into the room.
Findical- Lvl 33 Barbarian Berserker. His breast plate looks like crap, but its better in stats then the one that goes with the armor set.
Qeynos- It was raining in all of these shots, but it is kinda hard to see in some of them.
Thats all of them. In my opinion EQ2 is by far better in graphics then L2. The armor in EQ2 is a bit more realistic, there is no spikes coming from your hips or ankles. Freeport and Qeynos are magnificent, they are huge and are both very well engineered.
After taking all these screenshots I realized how much I like EQ2. I almost got killed taking one of those screenshots after trying to take my berserker to a waterfall for a good shot.

I still prefer the L2 graphics as I like their style and texturing better but

Specifically look at the arm's in the Elbow region. you will notice the shape of the arm's are diamond shaped in regards to the circumfrence of the arms, where as the EQ2 ones are rounded. Again I am making reference to the model it's self, and its not an armor texture here that is shaped by the base model.
I wish I had not wiped my hard drive when I uninstalled EQ2 I had some excellent High res pictures that really showed off how impressive the engine was. Its just a pity that the EQ2 art team was as uninspired as they were when it came to armor texture, I will give you that L2 hands down has far better looking armor as far as texture is concerned. Leave it like this, Let the L2 art team, get ahold of the EQ2 engine and character models and you would in fact have the most visually stunning game on the market hands down.
A lot of people who played and quit have really torched this game. Complaining of hackers and grindfest. Thats not an enviroment most of us want to be in. If so many are complaining about these two topics then that suggest its a valid point.
If only we could mix and match MMOs the way we mix and match clothes!
I could so go for an MMO that combines somthing like.. WoW quest content + Saga of Ryzom NPC/Mob/Environment programming + L2 art , PvP and flying mounts + AO character implants and stat system + CoH customization .. etc etc

NOOOOOO! Don't buy it!!! You can download the free FULL version with Chronicle 3 at www.Lineage2.com ! Phew I hope you read this before you bought it. No reason to buy it now, the download is free.
EDIT: I see you like to have a boxed game, but if you do buy the boxed version you're still gonna have download C1, C2 AND C3, which is more data than the original game. I lost my bought copy lol and thank goodness you can just download it now. I HATED Lineage 2 back when it came out, me and my gf played for about 3 months before I just said that's enough! But boy they have spiced this puppy up a TON since then! New everything basically. I love quests especially in a game that takes a lot of exp to level, and the quests made me love it again.
Here is a hitch. I went ahead and DL'd the game and am now trying to get a L2 account going but it asks for a Serial Code that I do not have. So to play I have to purchase one for $49.99. I think I'll just wait for my Amazon order of $20 to come in so I can use that serial. I did try to cancel after your post but item was already shipping so I couldn't, which turns out for the best it seems.
I think maybe he meant you could try it on a private server or something. Personally I think private servers are a waste of time so I think what you did is best.
